- The actual amount of Vitamin D required in order to maintain normal levels in the body is dependent on a multitude of factors: age, diet, personal habits, skin tone/colour, average exposure to the sun, as well as pre-existing conditions that may affect each persons needs and therefore, each case should be evaluated individually by a consulting medical professional.

The general recommendation is for adults to receive 800 IU (International Units) of Vitamin D daily, in order to maintain normal levels of Vitamin D in their body (although it has been found that elderly people do require higher doses), as well as including fish in their diet, at least two times per week.
- The American Pediatrics Associations advises all breastfeeding infants to receive Vitamin D supplements for the initial 6 months of their life, and to provide all children and teens that do not consume a minimum of 1000ml of milk per day, should receive 400 IU of Vitamin D (usually, whole milk contains approximately 40 IU of Vitamin D/ 100ml).
