The main Vitamin D food groups are:

Wild salmon contains approximately 988IU of Vitamin D per portion, while salmon that has been bred in a fish-farm contains approximately 250 IU.

Oysters are full of nutrients, and putting aside their Vitamin D content, they also contain more Vitamin B12, copper and zinc than the average multivitamin supplement.

Herring contains 16.128IU of Vitamin D per 100gr portion. Herring, sardines and makerel (i.e. fatty fish) are all good sources of Vitamin D.

Canned tuna contains 236IU of Vitamin D per portion. No more than 170 gr should be consumed per week in order to avoid concentration of methylmercury.

Shrimp offer 152IU of Vitamin D and are also very low on fat content.

Eggs contain approximately 40IU of Vitamin D.

Mushrooms can synthesize Vitamin D when exposed to UV light, as such only wild mushrooms or mushrooms that have been treated with UV light while growing are considered adequate sources of Vitamin D.

Since natural sources of Vitamin D are limited and dietary restrictions/ limitations ( a vegan diet or a lack of taste for fish) can minimize our Vitamin D intake, certain foods that do not naturally contain Vitamin D are being “enriched” with Vitamin D. Such foods include milk, soy milk, orange juice and cereal. Usually these “fortified foods” contain between 55 and 130IU of Vitamin D. The process of enriching foods is often used to help combat a particular deficiency in a large part of the population.
